Handle a Power Outage

Homeowners, Know How to Handle a Power Outage

When it goes dark, here’s how to handle a power outage.

Weather, accidents, storms, and not paying the electricity bill can disrupt the power that we’re so used to having. Serious damage to the power lines and the electrical grid can cause outages for days or weeks. As a homeowner, you should know how to handle a power outage, as well as safety precautions to take.

Short-Term Power Failures

First, don’t panic! Check to see if your neighbors still have electricity. If they do, the problem is likely inside your home. Check your main fuses or circuit breakers to see if they have blown or tripped. Replacing a fuse or resetting a circuit breaker may bring the light back.

Unplug all appliances with electrical components, such as microwaves, televisions, and computers. This will help to eliminate damage to your appliances from voltage surges when the electricity is restored.

Long-Term Power Failures

If you use a standby generator, be sure it has been installed and wired correctly. A generator that has been installed incorrectly can be extremely dangerous when running your appliances, and even when the power comes back on. It’s also important to be sure that a fresh supply of fuel to power the generator is on hand and stored properly.

To make an outage easier to cope with, keep an adequate supply of the following on hand at all times! These should be stored in a cool, dry place, and all members of the family should know where to find them:

  • Flashlights
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Candles and matches
  • Supplies of batteries for flashlights and radios
  • Basic first-aid supplies
  • Non-perishable food
  • Plenty of water
  • The pet’s food and medications
  • Blankets

It’s always best to be prepared for such an incident, rather than stumble around in the dark looking for your flashlight and supplies!

Sleep Throughout the Holidays

Seven Steps to Get Quality Sleep Throughout the Holidays

Maintain a good night’s sleep throughout the holidays!

Between the holiday shopping, parties, and family visits, the holiday season can leave you short on time and sleep. But it’s important to keep your sleep routine so that you can truly enjoy the season. A lack of quality sleep increases the chances of gaining holiday weight, becoming stressed and irritable, as well as being detrimental to your health. Getting a good sleep throughout the holidays is essential!

Stick to your normal routine. Even though this is easier said than done with the parties and late night holiday shopping, try to stay consistent in your sleeping routine, even on weekends! If you have an evening holiday party to attend and you plan on staying up later that night, try to keep your wake up time the same, even if you feel tired the next day.

Avoid eating two hours before bed. Eating wakes up our mind and bodies, making it harder for us to fall asleep straight after a bowl of pasta. If you’re hungry, sip on some almond milk or grab a piece of fresh fruit.

Make your bedroom a sanctuary. Minimize noise, close the blinds to block out light and avoid having too many electrical devices in the bedroom. Watching TV or going on the computer before bedtime makes it harder to fall asleep as the bright light and content stimulate our brains to stay awake.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Parties without a drink? Mornings without coffee? Believe it or not, but it can be done! Never drink caffeine before bed, as it will only wake you up. As for alcohol, it’s a depressant and can dramatically decrease your quality of sleep. Have a glass of juice in the morning or evening instead!

Get enough exercise. Exercising during the day reduces the levels of stress hormones in your body. However, avoid any exercise too strenuous within three hours of bedtime. Regular exercise can promote a deeper sleep!

Jackson & Jackson wish your and your family a safe and happy holiday – with plenty of sleep! For all of your California auto and home insurance needs in the San Dimas and surrounding areas in the state, contact us today.

Host a Festive Party

How to Host a Festive Party That Everyone Will Enjoy!

If you’re planning to host a festive party this year, use these stress-free tips.

Throwing an elegant holiday cocktail party or laid-back get-together doesn’t have to be stressful. Yet, when you’re planning and prepping, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and snowed under with things to do. So that you host a festive party that everyone will enjoy, check out these stress-free steps!

Pick the Right Date

Schedules fill up fast between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, so it’s important to reserve your date early. If Fridays and Saturdays are filling up fast, opt for a Thursday get-together. Don’t forget about the week between Christmas and New Year’s when there’s unexpected lull in the action!

Set the Mood

Hone in on a theme, even a casual or understated one. Do whatever it takes to solidify your vision. Get onto Pinterest for inspiration for themes, decorations, menus, and more!

Stock Up

If you’re going to be hosting a holiday party, you’ll want to stock up on food and drinks for your guests! Supply them with snackable holiday favorites from appetizers to puddings. Your guests may not remember what you served, but they will remember if you ran out of food or drinks. Also, offer designated drivers a variety of sodas and juices instead of an alcoholic beverage.

Set Up the Flow
If you’re going to be hosting a crowd, consider the flow of people. Offer drinks in one room, a buffet in the main room (with plenty of space to walk around it) and set bowls of snacks all around.

Enjoy It

If your guests see you relaxed, they will relax. Similarly, if they see you anxious and panicking, they will be, too. Be sure to remember to pour yourself a drink, relax, mingle, and enjoy the evening!

Before you host your festive party, be sure to review your homeowners insurance to make sure that your house is covered for falls, trips, and fires. Contact the California experts, Jackson & Jackson for all of your insurance needs in San Dimas and surrounding cities.

Holiday Decorating Safety

Deck the Halls with These Holiday Decorating Safety Steps

Use these holiday decorating safety steps to prep for your festivities!

If you’re about to pick up the tree, hang the holly, and light up the sparkling lights, you’ll know that it’s the season of decorations! Whether you’re entertaining guests, decorating the home or shopping for gifts, it’s easy to get caught up in the holidays. The winter season is the ideal time to stoke up a fire, light up the tree, and prepare your home for the whole family. With these holiday decorating safety steps in place, you’re able to enjoy the season!

  • Check for freshness in a live tree. If the tree is fresh, the needles should be hard to pull off or break. The bottom of a fresh tree is sticky with resin and doesn’t shed many needles when tapped on the ground.
  • Keep trees away from heat sources like fireplaces, vents, and radiators. Have the tree properly hydrated throughout the season.
  • If you get an artificial tree, look for a label that says, ‘fire resistant.’
  • Child-proof decorations. Avoid sharp, weighted or breakable decorations if you have small children. Keep lit candles away from children and pets, as well as decorations that look like candy.
  • Check each light set, regardless if it’s new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed wires, and loose connections. Replace any damaged sets instead of risking it by using them.
  • Only use outdoor lights that are certified for outdoor use, and only plug them into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected outlet.
  • Keep burning candles where you can see them. Blow out all candles before going to bed or leaving the room or house.

Choose a Green Vehicle

How to Choose a Green Vehicle

Here’s how to choose a green vehicle to benefit your wallet and the environment.

In the 21st century, cars have become a necessity for almost every family across the United States. Public transportation is being phased out as rates climb higher and their reliability decreases. Now comes the question of choosing the right vehicle for your family. The best way to choose a green vehicle is to consider many factors about the efficiency of the car.

Whether you need a pickup or a compact car, here’s how to select the right car for you!

Fuel Efficiency

A big part of what makes a green vehicle ‘green’ is the miles that it gets per gallon and how it burns the fossil fuels. When engines use gas, they produce greenhouses gasses. Consuming the least amount of fuel for more miles is the key to going green, so make sure that high mileage is a priority.

There are a minimum emissions standards prescribed. Find where your vehicle ranks and ensure that it emits as little as possible, as emissions are key factors in polluting the environment.

Most hybrids pair a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery capable of powering the car alone during times of low demand. When the engine runs, it recharges the battery, so the vehicle doesn’t need to be charged. These efficient systems can cut fuel consumption by 30 to 50 percent over the gasoline-fueled versions of the same auto models. They can also reduce smog pollution drastically, almost 90 percent over even the cleanest fuel-only vehicles.

Electric Vehicles

The massive sales of Tesla’s electric cars show the enormous potential of these electric vehicles! Completely electric cars have zero-emissions and promote good green savings.

Auto Insurance in San Dimas

Is Cheap Auto Insurance Worth It?

Can you still get full coverage on cheap auto insurance in San Dimas?

Whether it’s bundling policies or buying a safe car, almost every motorist looks to save a dollar where they can. Even though many factors determine the price of auto insurance in San Dimas, many people cut down coverage until they reach an optimum spending limit. While this can work in favor for your wallet (in the short term), it may be doing more harm than good.

Here’s why cheap car insurance may not be worth it.

Higher deductibles equal higher out-of-pocket expenses. One of the easiest ways to save on car insurance is to raise the deductibles. Doing so will increase the cost of filing a claim as you’ll have to pay more out of pocket. Bear this in mind when choosing your policy.

You’re putting your assets and earnings at risk. Available limits can seem staggeringly high. Possibly even beyond the levels of damage that you imagine you might inflict. Even so, you’d be surprised at how fast these limits can be reached and breached. Accidents can total up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you only have the state minimum of $25,000 per person of bodily injury liability insurance, and you cause another driver $40,000 worth of medical bills, you’ll be responsible for the remaining $15,000!

Dropping uninsured motorist coverage can be risky. If someone with no insurance or very little insurance damages your car, you could be left to pay major expenses. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage protects you in these situations to that you don’t have to face high costs on your own. Choosing a cheap car insurance policy without this coverage is a financial risk.

An experienced agent can help you to choose the right amount of auto insurance in San Dimas that suits you and your vehicle in California. Talk to the professionals at Jackson & Jackson to get set up with the right car coverage today!

Declutter Your Home

How to Declutter Your Home

Get organized with these tips on how to declutter your home.

The idea of living a simplified, uncluttered life with less stuff sounds attractive to many homeowners. Getting rid of your junk means that there is less to clean, organize, move, and more energy for more important tasks. If you’re ready to declutter your home but don’t know where to start, check out these steps on how to reduce the junk and organize your home.

Ask if you’d buy it today – When deciding if you should keep something, ask yourself if you’d purchase it today if you didn’t have it. If it doesn’t give you instant happiness, choose to donate it or throw it away.

Organize room by room – Instead of organizing different categories at once move through the house room by room. That way, you won’t stop in the middle of one room or get too overwhelmed.

Clear off flat surfaces – Countertops, shelves, and other flat surfaces are clutter magnets. Get rid of the bills, mail, magazines, small appliances, and other items that sit on these flat surfaces. Only keep frequently-used or essential items.

Go paperless – Is your desk drowning in paper? Go online and choose the paperless option for all of your bills, utilities, notifications, and magazine subscriptions. For the paperwork that you have already, scan in important documents and receipts to make a digital record, then shred and throw away the paper if you don’t need a physical copy lying around.

Keep similar items together. Categorizing things as you go through each room is imperative when organizing your home. Store similar items close to where you’ll use them to reduce some of the little frustrations in your daily life. What’s more, once you have all the like items together, you may realize that you don’t need five stopwatches.

With your home now full of only essential and necessary belongings, make sure to update your homeowners insurance. Contact the California experts, Jackson & Jackson for all of your insurance needs in San Dimas and surrounding cities.
